My return to university as an adult in the early 1990s was motivated by the hardwon epiphany that Progress, as taught in our systemic mass education, was not actually a given, let alone a noun. Funded, in part, by the sale of our London home. If we had stayed there we would have ‘made a fortune’ but never experienced the freedom of action and thought the slow descent downwards out of class and place has gifted us. These days are indeed a rollercoaster ride increasingly during a series of earthquakes !
I have long since turned inwards and backwards for soul support. Reading and remembering highlights of a childhood blessed by a degree of material stability but a lot of physical neglect which I often spent idling alone in wild nature. All long since either polluted or cemented in for some individuals short term profits. I work daily to pay attention to what we may all be learning about our unconscious ignorance from our shared suffering. Hopefully we are all progressing, as in peregrinative walking, with open and increasingly compassionate hearts.
Thank You. It's great to hear from you again. I hope things are going well for you over there. Sooner or later the light will come on and the message will sink in. I no longer expect to live to see that day, however.
Nil desperandum. My partner is convinced he will live to see the light coming up and he turns 76 this year. We are surviving but the cultural structural faultlines you so eruditely outline here are destroying political cohesion in all democratic capitalist states. Northern Ireland has it’s own added stress with an anachronistic British colonialist education system still structured upon strict state religious apartheid lines. The lack of political concern about this damaging social imbalance drives me rage crazy some days. Wishing you all the best. 🐈⬛
Life used to be characterized by the yo-yo effect. Now, it is a wild roller-coaster ride, day after day. Thankfully, there are some good days with bits of optimism. Being forced to keep fighting keeps us busy and preoccupied, at least. I think that we are still feeling backlash from the Enlightenment. I have to believe that our direction overall is toward progress, sanity, and peace. Education is where politics are felt most intensely and intimately. Educators must start catching up soon. I believe that change is inevitable. But control, as I tried to say in the post is a high priority for all those who have it, and no one wants to relinquish it to allow children to prove their humanity, their greatness, and intelligence.

A great piece of passion and much needed insight. Thanks. Deepest condolences for the tragic loss of your niece.
